BCMBA 16u Selects Advance to CABA Tournament Semi-Final

The BC Minor 16u Selects advanced to the semi-final game of the NorCal CABA 16u 4th of July Classic Tournament in Fremont, California before falling to the Alameda World team by a score of 9-1.

The 16u Selects arrived in the Bay Area on July 2 and won their first exhibition game 6-5 over eventual tournament champion East Bay Lookouts. On July 3 the Selects lost 3-1 to the EJ Sports Titans, before taking in an Oakland A’s MLB game and 4th of July Fireworks at O.co Coliseum. On July 4 the Selects lost an exhibition game to 18u Oakland Baseball Club 9-3 before watching another MLB game where the A’s beat the Blue Jays 1-0 in 12 innings! Saturday, July 5 saw the Selects sweep a double header, beating Alameda World Team 8-6 and North Bay Baseball 7-2. That set up the semi-final rematch with Alameda World Team where the Selects ran into some outstanding pitching to end their tournament run.

Overall the 16u Selects finished their trip with a won-loss record of 3-3, but more importantly they faced stiff competition and were forced to adapt to the increased speed of the game and get more aggressive in their approaches at the plate and on the mound. Overall 5 different starting pitchers were used in the 6 games, and all 11 pitchers on the roster saw mound time. The players got a taste of playing every day and had an opportunity to learn about the mental and physical skills components of the game, as well as physical conditioning and nutrition thanks to coaches Orville Germaine and Matt Holtzmann.

The goal of the BCMBA 16u Selects program is player development. This trip, combined with the 3 day skills camp that ran June 25-27 in Aldergrove, are a great start to BC Minor’s ongoing commitment to provide enhanced coaching, exposure and competitive opportunities to players at the 16u level.

The following people were awarded scholarhip money from BC Minor at the Awards Ceremony earlier in February this year.

Scholarships were issued to:

Ryan Andrews – Cloverdale
Liam Muir – Coquitlam-Moody
Steven Rintoul – Kamloops
Luke Yam – Richmond
Michael Yamaguchi – Richmond
