South Delta Brewers and the Ridge Meadow Royals squared off in a tightly, competitive Junior Men’s Tier 1 final on Sunday morning at Hammond Stadium in Maple Ridge. South Delta Brewers surrounded the first 4 runs against a very season long, dominant Ridge Meadows squad. The Brewers finally got on
the board via a pitcher balk and then 3 more runs with timely hitting and aggressive base running to even the score in the sixth inning. Both teams would continue to trade runs with good hits until Ridgetook the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning on a run scoring, extra base hit.
In a dramatic ninth inning, Ridge Meadows were two outs away from a championship win, when a hard hit to center with a good effort by the center fielder, however, the ball unfortunately fell out of theglove to give South Delta the game tying runner on base. The next batter took a full count fastball deep over the long, right field fence for the go ahead 7-6 lead. The bottom of the ninth would see a lead-off walk turn into a double play, followed by a strikeout to end the hosts opportunity for a comeback.
To get to the finals, Ridge Meadows defeated their arch nemesis Tri City Indians 5-0 and South Delta defeated a strong Cloverdale Spurs team 11-5 in the semi-finals played the previous day. This game was Cloverdale coach Rae Andrews last game as a coach, South Delta would like to congratulate Coach Andrews on a long and successful coaching career.
This is first Tier 1 title for any team in the Delta area.
The BC Minor Baseball Junior Men’s division continues to create a high level of recreational/competitive each year, and this season was no different. Tier 1 would see two competitive playoff pools with both pools needing the last day of playoff games to decide the finals participants. Several of the teams are
backed by younger players with this division remaining solid into the future.
South Delta would like to thank the Tsawwassen baseball association, parents and friends of the South Delta Brewers, Grant Butler for his hard work, and BC Baseball for their support in allowing players a place to continue to play.
